APFIT- What is it? And What Do You Need to Know About it?

Accelerate the Procurement and Fielding of Innovative Technologies (APFIT) was first established in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of 2022, under Subtitle D: Provisions Relating to Software and Technology, Section 834.

APFIT is a Department of War (DoW) program designed to help innovative technologies cross the “Valley of Death” — the gap between successful R&D and full-scale procurement. Unlike TACFI, STRATFI, or Army SBIR CATALYST — which are SBIR-based programs focused on R&D — APFIT provides direct procurement funding for production-ready technologies.

Originally launched as a pilot in FY 2022, APFIT was formally established as a permanent program (program-of-record) in the FY 2025 NDAA. It is managed at the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research & Engineering (OUSD(R&E)) level and continues to evolve as a key tool for accelerating the delivery of critical capabilities to the warfighter.

How Much is Awarded

APFIT awards range from $10 million to $50 million per project, with funding levels increasing significantly over time:

  • FY 2022: $100M total | 10 projects | $10M each
  • FY 2023: $150M total | 11 projects | $10M–$20M each
  • FY 2024: $300M total | 17 projects | $10M–$22M each
  • FY 2025: $400M total | 18 projects | $10M–$42M each
  • As of FY 2025, APFIT has awarded over $1.4 billion to more than 75 companies, catalyzing over $3.2 billion in follow-on funding across the DoD. The program’s largest single award to date is $49.7 million, and the average award size has exceeded $30 million in recent cycles.

Is Your Company Qualified for APFIT Funding?

Are you interested in pursuing APFIT funding in future rounds, but don’t know if you qualify?

Are you interested in pursuing APFIT funding in future rounds, but not sure if you qualify?

If you answer yes to these five questions, you could be a candidate:

    1. Do you have an established, production-ready technology that can use procurement dollars (i.e., you’re delivering a solution, not still developing one)?
    2. Have you won less than $500 million in cumulative DoD contracts?
    3. Are you a small business or a non-traditional defense contractor?
    4. Were you nominated by a DoD Program Office or other APFIT-designated submitting organization?
    5. Do you have an authorized contract vehicle with $10–$50M in available ceiling?

    Want to improve your chances?

In FY 2024 and FY 2025, having a Program Objective Memorandum (POM) request and a contract vehicle were preferred but not mandatory. However, these elements can significantly improve your nomination’s competitiveness and execution speed.
